Reading Lord of Desire has been my first experience with Paula Quinn. I am suitably impressed. Set just two years before the Battle of Hastings, the novel provides a substantive historical background that enhances, rather than overpowers, the intense and emotionally enthralling love story.
Lady Brynnafar Dumont has a difficult choice before her: either remain in her home and marry the Norman knight who has defeated her father in battle, or leave the keep forever to face an unknown fate. Because Lord Brand Risande seems to have a few redeeming qualities - after all, he did not slay her beloved father, as he might have done - she chooses to stay and make the best she can of the situation.
Brand is not certain he wishes to wed the strong-willed lass who vows that she will never be driven from her home. His attempts to intimidate her have no effect. Yet, there is something quite appealing about her. Might she be able to soothe the pain inflicted upon him by a faithless lover? And will he be able to protect her from the danger that threatens her very life?
Lord of Desire is a compelling love story, set against a major turning point in English history. As a matter of fact, William, Duke of Normandy, is a fully developed character in the novel. The novel ends as Brand rides into battle at William.s side, helping to integrate the turbulent history of the time into the tumultuous romance that touches the heart of any lover of medieval romance. The novel is so well done, in fact, that I plan to look for other Paula Quinn romances in the future.
