Sold to a Laird
By Karen Ranney
Avon
December 2009
Bartered like a piece of household furniture to her father’s erstwhile business partner, Lady Sarah Herridge finds herself wed to handsome inventor Douglas Eston in Karen Ranney’s Sold to a Laird. The Duke of Herridge has tired of his headstrong daughter and sees Eston’s need for an investment in a stunning new experiment as an opportunity to rid himself of Sarah while gaining capital for his shrinking bank account.
Douglas realizes right away that he has come away from this business deal with his true love, indeed he has experienced true love at first sight. Sarah, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with Douglas or marriage as her attentions focus on her beloved mother who is on her deathbed. Douglas and Sarah move out of London to the Duke’s country estate and it is there that Douglas begins the process of courting Sarah and winning her heart.
Author Karen Ranney explores the relationship between Douglas and Sarah delicately and sensitively, building tension between the couple as well as creating great suspense for the reader. Douglas and Sarah’s love story is allowed to move at its own pace, slowly and tenderly, as Sarah nurses her mother till her death and goes through a deep mourning process. When Sarah expresses the desire to visit her mother’s ancestral home, Douglas arranges for them to journey to Scotland to do so, bringing Sarah full circle to meet the grandfather and family she never knew existed.
Romance blooms like a rose as Douglas peels away layers of bruised feelings and insecurities to open Sarah’s heart to his deep and eternal love. Sarah’s eventual realization that she loves Douglas as much as he loves her is evidence that Douglas’ steadfast attentions and dedication to winning her heart are indeed successful. This is a romance novel for true lovers of the genre. Reading Sold to a Laird is like eating a box of fine chocolates – better savored than devoured, although the temptation is great to read the whole book in one sitting.
