Based on the family from the bestselling Love In A Nutshell.
The young and vibrant Caroline Maxwell is a protected American heiress wanting more from life than a title and a large household. But in New York City upper-crust society of 1894 your future is planned and set for you. Caroline consciously scares away the men that her mother deems qualified for her hand in marriage. She doesn’t love or want any of them. She wants to eat chocolate cake and live adventures like her brother, Eddie, and his friend Jack Culhane, the only man that Caroline can’t scare away.
She makes Jack laugh out loud because she passionately speaks her mind. Oh, she does want his attention, but her mother would never accept a man with new money and no social prestige. This is a time when America’s noveau riche want the titles that the old European royalty carry. Without question—Caroline’s mother will marry her daughters to nobility.
Just as Jack is noticing everything about Caroline, her controlling mother finds Lord Bremerton for her to wed. He's a creepy little fellow that has a large name. He makes the hair on Caroline’s arms rise and not with anticipation of a stolen kiss either. Bremerton is looking for a marriage to a proper lady with money, and he is betting his title on reigning over Caroline. And, unfortunately, Jack Culhane doesn’t even realize that he is being pursued by another young aristocrat, Harriet Vandermeulen. He has been scheduled to attend his own Winter Wedding to Harriet.
Time is running out for these two people to admit they love each other. For Jack to stop the arranged marriages to Bremerton and Harriet, he’ll need to make a stand against family and friends, especially before any real harm comes to Caroline. The Husband List a wonderful period story built around a romance with just enough conflict and eerie mystery to make this a quick read.
