Against the Odds (Raines of Wind Canyon)
By Kat Martin
Sabrina “Rina” Eckhart used to be a successful Houston stockbroker before the economy tanked. Now, with her reserves gone, along with most of her clients, she sells what’s left of her fine possessions just to pay the bills. The solution to her dilemma arrives when her old prospector uncle bequeaths her three thousand acres of West Texas desert, including his old mining operation. He’d never actually struck ore, but insisted he was on the verge, and Rina was the only one who believed in him. With nothing to lose, she decides to locate the mine and run it herself.
Rina seeks the help of private investigator Alex Justice, a former Navy fighter pilot and notorious womanizer. She can’t stand him, but he owns his own airplane and she hopes to hire him, cheap, to do an aerial search for the mine. Alex is surprised to see Rina and can’t help wondering why she came to him, of all people. Still, he can’t seem to tell the feisty little redhead no.
What begins as an exciting adventure for Rina quickly turns into a string of life-threatening accidents, too bizarre to be coincidence. When Alex digs deeper, it appears there are a lot of people who would gain by Rina’s death. In fact, she may not be the first person killed over the old prospector’s mine.
Martin creates heart pounding suspense in an intricately woven plot of nearly constant peril. For Rina and Alex, being forced together for their very survival only intensifies the unlikely attraction between them. If that isn’t enough, a gripping subplot about a vindictive child abuser on the loose keeps the action careening toward the explosive conclusion. Pure romantic suspense gold.
