Scream for Me
By Karen Rose
Grand Central
May 2008
Thirteen years ago Alex Fallon’s twin, Alicia Tremaine, was found nude, wrapped in a blanket, dead, and with her face completely obliterated. After identifying the remains of her daughter, Kathy Tremaine went home and blew her brains out. When Alex found her mother dead, she tried to overdose on the sedatives prescribed for Kathy. Kathy and her girls had been living with a man and his wild teen-agers, Wade and Bailey. Wade was mean and ran with an equally wild and mean group of guys. Alex is taken to Ohio by Kathy’s sister, Kim Fallon, and her family – husband Steve and daughter Meredith. She is adopted by the Fallons and eventually has a normal, productive life. She has had off and on contact with Bailey who had become an out-and-out drug addict. Now years later, Alex gets a phone call that Bailey is missing and Alex is the contact for emergencies – the emergency is that Bailey’s four-year-old daughter, Hope, needs Alex to come back to Dutton, Georgia and look after her until her mother comes home.
Daniel Vartanian left Dutton when he was a teen-ager and has seldom returned. His last visit was just days ago for the funerals of his parents after his brother, Simon, a serial killer in Boston, see DIE FOR ME killed them. Daniel is a Special Agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and has been assigned a case involving a young woman whose body was found in identical circumstances to Alicia Tremaine’s. A drugged out vagrant was convicted of Alicia’s death and is serving a life sentence in the penitentiary. This current murder has got to be the work of a copy-cat killer.
Daniel and Alex are thrown together when Alex reports her step-sister’s disappearance directly to him since the Dutton authorities have no interest in finding Bailey. Daniel and Alex share a bond in that neither of them ever wanted to return to Dutton, a place of unbearable memories for each of them. Daniel is withholding some information about Simon’s friends in Georgia that may be pertinent to the current investigation, but it will hurt Alex badly. The romantic relationship between Daniel and Alex is believable and beautiful.
There are two storylines in this scary and oftentimes ugly, but always titillating, thriller. Karen Rose’s ingenious plotting and magnificent protagonists lift this romantic thriller to the highest level of satisfaction for the reader who relishes this genre. Be warned, however, that once you start this bestseller, you probably won’t be able to put it down. This reviewer can’t wait for the next story in this series, KILL FOR ME, due for release in February 2009.
