His Captive Lady (Berkley Sensation)
By Anne Gracie
Berkley Sensation
August 2008
Regency England
When Harry Morant returns from eight years in the Napoleonic Wars, he’s ready to devote himself to horse breeding and a middle-class marriage without emotion. But his plans are threatened at his new estate by an unexpected passion for –surprisingly—an earl’s daughter. Nell, Lady Helen Freymore, isn’t interested in Harry’s sudden suit, or any man. A lifetime of broken promises has brought her to this final humiliation—the estate she thought was in her name was part of the legacy her father gambled away like everything else. She trusts no man, and has secured a job as companion that will place her in London, where she can pursue her secret quest.
But Harry is persistent when he meets Nell and her employer in Bath, and enlists his aunt in his pursuit of the elusive bride. He traps her into trysts, finally compromising her so that she is forced to marry him. Nell then tries to beg off because of her secret quest—she has an illegitimate daughter she’s searching for. But Harry won’t accept this excuse. He’ll help find the baby and they will bring her up with their other children. She accepts this generous offer, but then they find the baby has died. Oh woe! What will happen?
HIS CAPTIVE LADY is Anne Gracie at her best, and her best is very good. She has a lyrical writing style reminiscent of Mary Balogh, and the talent to bring readers vibrant characters, potent plots and sizzling sensuality. This book seems to be the start of a trilogy, so we can anticipate two more stories about his friends. YUM!
