Don't Tempt Me
By Loretta Chase
Avon
July 2009
Lucien de Grey, the eleventh Duke of Marchmont, owes a lot to Lord Lexham. Following the deaths of their parents when Lucien was ten and his older brother, Gerard was thirteen, Lord Lexham took over the role of father figure to them. Three years later after Gerard’s death, it was Lord Lexham who gave Lucien comfort and solace, and prepared the young duke for his duties. Lucien became part of the large Lexham family, and was especially fond and protective of the youngest, Zoe Octavia, as she was a dare-devil tom-boy, and she could always make him laugh.
Twelve years ago, when Zoe was twelve, she disappeared from her family while on a vacation in the eastern Mediterranean. All attempts to find the child failed, and over the ensuing years many showed up at the Lexham’s claiming to be their long-lost-child. On April 1, 1818, word gets out that the real Zoe has been reunited with her family. Could this be an April Fools’ joke? Lucien doesn’t believe it to be true, and swears he will know if this woman is an imposter or not, even though Lord Lexham has proclaimed she is his daughter. Lo and behold, it is the real Zoe, and her return home after living in a harem all those lost years seems to be causing the family problems instead of joy. However, the stature and popularity of the eleventh Duke of Marchmont can bring Zoe out into society and hush the scandal mongers. The problem is – can his patience, his nerves, and his bachelorhood survive being with this new Zoe?
Don't Tempt Me is in a word, superb. This reviewer truly loved this book, and in my humble opinion believes it might just be Loretta Chase’s best one to date. There is humor, poignancy, angst, and serenity sprinkled in equal measure throughout this beautiful story. The protagonists are fantastic, and the secondary characters – especially Zoe’s nay-saying sisters – are funny. For fans of Ms. Chase, this will definitely be a keeper.
For new readers, it will be an introduction to one of the best of the best Regency authors in today’s and yesterday’s market. Highly recommended!
