After her horrendous experience responding to a shooting that occurred on the campus of Virginia Tech, Stacey Rhodes is happy to follow in her father’s boot steps. She becomes the sheriff in her quiet home town of Hope Valley, where nothing big ever happens.
She couldn’t be more wrong. The FBI Cyber Action Team CAT has discovered a secret website called Satan’s Playground, where a character named the Reaper accepts bids from the site’s viewers who determine what type of killing they want to see next. On a hunch, the CAT, lead by Special Agent Dean Taggert, travels to Hope Valley to follow up on a missing person report filed by Stacey a year and a half ago.
When Stacey views the FBI’s Satan’s Playground video, she’s shocked by what she sees, but is able to identify the victim in the film as the missing young woman. Stacey also thinks she recognizes where the killing took place—right outside Hope Valley. With another auction due to occur soon, the team is racing against the clock to find the Reaper before he snatches another victim for his next video feature.
Working together on the case, Stacey and Dean find that they have a lot in common, and the attraction between them is impossible to resist. They agree that neither of them has time for anything long term, and that their relationship will remain strictly friends with benefits. But when things heat up in the Reaper case, and someone starts making threats against Stacey, Dean realizes he cares for her far more than he thought.
Parrish’s debut novel, book #1 of her Black CAT series, is positively masterful. She doesn’t pull any punches in her dark, intense, and in-your-face plot. From the first page of the prologue, the reader is immersed in the Reaper’s twisted world of entertainment. The characters are well crafted, and the seedy backwoods town of Hope Valley brings them all to life in vivid detail. The inventory of unsavory suspects keeps the suspense building to the very end. Stacey’s and Dean’s love story is heartfelt and tender, and the constant interruptions from danger and mayhem make their desire all the more urgent. Place this one on your must read list--Parrish is one to watch.

Not Done Yet ... But Loving It: (2010-05-05)
I recently started Fade to Black and really am enjoying the book on Kindle. I just realized there was a book prior to this, which I probably will order. Hope the author comes out with more.
Nope, not good: (2010-02-19)
I read the prologue and first chapter and gave up. I didn't believe these characters for a second. Too much smirking, eye rolling etc. More than one, one of the characters saw doubt, or fear or some darn thing in another characters eyes! Oy, all I've ever seen in another person's eyes is....eyeballs. The writing is not good. WAY too much telling, not enough showing. Too many adverb modifying verbs. I don't let my beginning writing students get away with that. I have to wonder - are ALL THREE of the books in the series this bad?????
Great mystery diluted by romance: (2010-02-12)
I am not a fan of romance novels. In other words, I would not knowingly purchase a traditional romance novel. I purchased this series without realizing that Parrish writes romantic suspense. The search for the serial killer was good, really, really good, but for me it was diluted by all the interruptions to iterate and reiterate the characters romantic interest in one another. I would have enjoyed the book so much more had the author not spent so much time illuminating the romantic interest between the two main characters. If the author had just toned down the sentiments, sensations and passions, the mystery of who was committing these crimes was five star quality. So if you enjoy romantic suspense, you will most certainly enjoy this book. For those readers who prefer to read less about a character's love life and more about the mystery and finding the serial killer, I recommend the Stony Barrett series by Cody McFadyen.
